Project Updates

On August 8, 2011, the Town of Medley received approval for a loan through the State of Florida Revolving Fund (SRF) program in the amount of $2.94 million. This loan will be used for the construction of drainage improvements in the area of the Town known as Flood Mitigation Area North. Our engineers assisted the Town during the inclusion of this project in the list of State eligible funding projects as well as during the preparation of the loan application process. Previously, and through a Resources Recovery Facility Cells 17/18 ConstructionFlorida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) grant that Westhorp & Associates managed for the Town, we prepared design and bid documents and received final permits from the Miami-Dade County Department of Environmental Resources Management (DERM) and the Town of Medley for the construction of this project.

On September 9, 2011, the Miami-Dade County Public Works and Waste Management Department (PW&WMD, formerly the Department of Solid Waste Management) received the acceptance of Certification of Construction Completion of Cells 17/18 Closure. This project was designed by Westhorp & Associates and our engineers provided inspection services during the closure construction.

During the month of September 2011, Westhorp & Associates began providing construction inspection services for the construction of the sub-base of Cell 5 of the South Dade Landfill. This is a PW&WMD project that Westhorp engineers previously designed.

Community Involvement

Westhorp & Associates, Inc. is proud to have supported Citizens for a Better South Florida on a recent rainy Saturday afternoon. "An Afternoon in the Garden" was Citizens' first annual fundraiser. Citizens’ Young Professionals Branching Out spearheaded this event. The event was held at the beautiful Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden and the afternoon was full of great live music, drinks, tasty food. We are excited that we won the use of the historic Citizens’ bungalow for both a weekday and a weekend event! A word from our President, Brenda J. Westhorp, P.E.

It's hard to believe that this year is nine years since my breast cancer diagnosis! It feels like a lifetime ago thanks to all the progress that has been made in early detection and treatment. Join me today in this worthwhile cause so that we can one day find a cure! This will be the first year since my diagnosis that I am not personally attending the Komen Race for the Cure. I’ll be in North Carolina visiting with my 88 year old mother.

What am I doing?
I'm working to support the Miami/Ft. Lauderdale Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure because I want to make a difference in the fight against breast cancer. Susan G. Komen for the Cure® ranked number one in a recent Harris Interactive poll as the most valued non-profit brand and the charity people are most likely to donate money to. Additionally, Komen for the Cure ranked second on the 2010 list of the nation’s most trusted charities.

Please help me reach my fundraising goal by making a tax-deductible donation today. As a team, we raised close to $5,000 in 2010!  You may donate online with your credit card by going to http://komenmiaftl.org/ and clicking on the “Komen Race for the Cure” tab, then on the drop down menu click on the "Donate" button. Search for us by team name under “Brenda's Buddies” or by my name. Your support helps us get another step closer to a world without breast cancer.

I am also thinking of video on a YouTube channel for our company where we can have our experts discuss things of interest to our clients. With our company about to celebrate our 15 year anniversary, the timing could not be better”.

The objective of setting up the blog and the video channel is to establish the company as experts in the civil engineering field in the Miami area and boost the company's presence on the Internet.

Kicking Off...

Office Warming PartyThe first part of the year has been exciting and busy here at Westhorp & Associates, Inc.  It’s hard to believe that it has already been four months since we moved into our new space!   We celebrated on March 8th by having an enjoyable office warming party. Thanks to all our friends who joined us for the festivities!

In Other News...

OfficeWe don’t just talk the talk, we walk the walk!  We made our office more energy efficient by properly sealing and caulking the large gaps of the large floor to ceiling windows in our new office space, which is a modern loft.  We felt the temperature difference immediately and are also benefitting from less outside noise (we are in the trendy area of Miami called The Upper East Side). We are also working our way toward a paperless office, we estimate that our use of paper for administrative purposes is down 75% - 80%!

Movie SetTo top it all off, on April 2nd, noted Hollywood director/producer Michael Bay began filming his new movie –Pain and Gain, starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Mark Wahlberg – across the street from us. When the celebrities were on-site, there were dozens of paparazzi on the street, rooftops, and in buildings trying to get a shot (ok, so one or two of us from Westhorp might have been trying too.)
