Westhorp & Associates (WA) proudly sponsored a meeting for the University of Miami (UM) Student Chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) in November 2010. Rather than simply writing a check to help buy pizza and soda, WA also provided guest speakers to the eager and dynamic UM students. The lecture topics involved solid waste and focused on landfill design, describing the process from opening to operation to closure.

The guest speakers, three UM alumni, were happy to be back on their old stomping grounds as they outlined the nuts and bolts of landfills. While some students were concurrently in a solid waste management class in their senior year, others had little knowledge of this important facet of civil and environmental engineering. After the general overview of landfill design, the guest speakers fielded the students' questions.

WA is happy to share the UM ASCE thank you letter and to reaffirm the importance of supporting the students, not only monetarily, but even more so in mentorship and in educational ventures. For more information about WA's philanthropic activities, see our community involvment page.
